How We Got Engaged

Jeremy and I got engaged on May 11, 2017 in the Bahamas. I knew it was going to be a memorable trip since neither of us had been to the Bahamas before and it was Jeremy’s first time out of the country. Secretly, Jeremy and my mother knew it was going to be extra memorable for another reason.

We took a seaplane – which was AMAZING and definitely something to add your bucket list if you’ve never done it – to the island of Bimini. My mom asked if we could be the last ones off the plane to take a group photo in front of it. As soon as the pilot finished taking our family picture and I started to walk away from the plane, I felt Jeremy gently pulling at my hand and leading me back towards it.

Naleni, the photographer Jeremy hired to capture the big moment, was off to the side shooting photos the whole time. Jeremy was nervous that me seeing her would tip me off that he was about to ask since I had mentioned before that I would love to have pictures of his proposal. Somehow, even though I had been on my toes for a while, I was completely taken by surprise.

Jeremy and my mom had been mailing my engagement ring back and forth for over a month. The setting was my mother’s original engagement ring from my dad twenty-five years ago. The diamond fell out when I was a kid and instead of replacing the diamond she ended up with a new ring. About a year before the proposal, I showed my mom photos online of what kind of ring I wanted one day. I was very specific – yellow gold, with baguette diamonds, and six prongs around a round diamond. When my mom explained that she had an identical ring in her jewelry box at home, I couldn’t believe it.

I love that he asked me right at the start of our vacation because we got to celebrate the whole week together in such a beautiful place with my family.
